Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer called on the Trump administration Monday to brief Congress immediately on what the White House has described as an “understanding” with Iran — one Trump claims will reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Schumer said lawmakers have been given no details on the terms of the arrangement and that Congress has a right to know what commitments, if any, the administration has made to Tehran.

The Strait of Hormuz carries roughly 20 percent of the world's oil supply. Any agreement affecting its status carries direct consequences for global energy markets and U.S. foreign policy.

Trump announced the understanding publicly without a corresponding notification to congressional leadership, a sequence Schumer called unacceptable. The senator stopped short of characterizing the arrangement as a formal treaty, which would require Senate ratification.

The White House had not responded to the demand as of Monday evening. Senate Majority Leader John Thune's office did not immediately confirm whether a classified briefing was being arranged.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is expected to press the administration for details at its next scheduled session.
