Twenty House Republicans broke with Speaker Mike Johnson Monday and joined Democrats to pass a bill amending the National Labor Relations Act, handing Johnson a rare floor defeat on a labor measure his leadership had opposed.

The final tally was not yet certified at press time, but sources tracking the floor count told the Wail the margin was narrow and the Republican defections were decisive.

The bill, backed by House Democrats and a bloc of union-district Republicans, would expand worker protections under the NLRA. Proponents argued the existing statute had not kept pace with changes in contract labor and gig employment. Johnson's office did not respond to a request for comment before publication.

The vote marks one of the sharpest open splits between rank-and-file House Republicans and their leadership this session. Several of the twenty crossover votes represent districts with heavy manufacturing or trade union presence.

The legislation now moves to the Senate, where Democratic leaders have not confirmed a timeline for floor consideration. A committee hearing is expected before the end of the month.
