An Army veteran whose Escondido, California home was covered in pro-Trump flags and signs has died after being beaten outside his property, the Wail confirmed Tuesday.

Kerry Sheron was left in critical condition following the attack and died days later. His age was not immediately confirmed in available reports.

Escondido police are investigating the assault. No arrests have been publicly announced as of publication.

Authorities have not formally stated whether Sheron's visible political displays were a motive, but the case has drawn attention from commentators on both sides of the debate over political violence.

Under California law, prosecutors can seek hate-crime sentencing enhancements where a victim is targeted on the basis of political affiliation. Whether investigators are pursuing that angle has not been confirmed.

Sheron's death marks at least the second high-profile case in recent months to raise questions about violence directed at homes displaying partisan symbols.

Escondido police are expected to provide a further update on the investigation this week. A charging decision, if any, has not been announced.
