The captain of a Russian shadow fleet tanker intercepted in the English Channel has been charged with contravening sanctions, UK authorities confirmed.
The defendant, an Indian national, commanded the vessel when it was detained in the Channel, according to documents reviewed by the Wail.
The tanker is among dozens of ageing ships believed to be carrying Russian oil on behalf of Moscow in breach of Western sanctions imposed following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Prosecutors allege the captain knowingly operated a vessel subject to UK and EU sanctions restrictions, making him one of the first shadow fleet crew members to face criminal charges in British waters.
The shadow fleet has drawn repeated warnings from NATO members and the Baltic states, who have pressed for harder enforcement against ships moving sanctioned Russian energy exports.
The case is expected to proceed to a UK court hearing in the coming weeks. No date has been publicly confirmed.
