A British soldier was killed in a training exercise accident in northern Iraq, Defence Secretary John Healey announced to the House of Commons on Monday.

Healey gave no immediate detail on the unit, rank, or name of the soldier, with next-of-kin notification still under way at the time of the announcement.

UK forces have maintained a training and advisory presence in Iraq as part of the broader coalition mission in the region. Training accidents involving live equipment and live-fire ranges have periodically claimed the lives of coalition personnel at bases across the country.

The Ministry of Defence has not yet confirmed the specific location of the exercise or the nature of the incident. A formal investigation is expected to be opened.

Further details, including the soldier’s identity and unit, are expected to be released by the MoD once the family has been informed.
