The United States military carried out strikes on boats attempting to lay mines and on missile launch sites, the Wail confirmed, as diplomatic talks between Iranian and Qatari negotiators were underway in Doha.
Iran condemned the attacks as a “gross violation” of the ceasefire, according to statements reviewed by the Wail, escalating tensions at the exact moment officials from both sides were seated at the negotiating table.
The strikes targeted vessels in the act of laying mines as well as fixed missile launch infrastructure, US officials confirmed. The operations were described as defensive in nature.
Tehran rejected that framing. Iranian officials said the attacks were deliberate and timed to undermine the Doha process, sources familiar with the talks told the Wail.
Qatar, which has served as the key intermediary in the negotiations, has not yet issued a public statement on the incident.
The fate of the Doha talks now hangs on whether Iranian negotiators remain at the table or withdraw. No formal adjournment had been announced as of filing time.
