DC Fast charging across the United States has become meaningfully faster and more dependable, according to data collected during a 600-mile EV road trip published Friday by TechCrunch.

The trip, documented with charging logs and stop-by-stop timing, showed repeated sessions reaching 80 percent battery in under 20 minutes — a benchmark that was the exception, not the rule, on comparable routes two or three years ago.

Station uptime was the sharper finding. Dead or occupied chargers, once frequent enough to strand drivers on long routes, appeared only rarely over the 600-mile run.

The improvement tracks with federal investment. The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program has directed more than $5 billion toward public charging buildout since 2022, adding thousands of fast-charging ports along highway corridors.

The data does not declare the problem solved. Rural gaps remain, and demand at popular corridors during holiday travel still strains capacity at individual stations.
