Federal prosecutors unsealed a 2024 grand jury indictment Tuesday charging three Russian nationals and two web hosting companies with running a bulletproof hosting operation that enabled cyberattacks netting $62 million from victims.
The Justice Department alleges the defendants operated hosting infrastructure deliberately designed to resist law enforcement takedown requests, shielding hackers from scrutiny while collecting fees from criminal clients.
Bulletproof hosting services have long been identified by U.S. authorities as a critical enabler of ransomware, banking fraud, and data-theft campaigns targeting American businesses and individuals.
The indictment does not specify when the attacks occurred, but prosecutors say the $62 million figure represents proceeds traceable to criminal activity facilitated through the two named hosting services.
All five defendants are believed to be in Russia. The Justice Department did not announce arrests or extradition proceedings as of Tuesday afternoon.
The case is expected to move to a federal district court for scheduling; no arraignment date has been set.
