Google has released a Workspace commercial in which the founding fathers are imagined using Gemini AI to draft the Declaration of Independence. The ad opens with the line “Group project, but make it 1776” and proceeds from there without apparent irony.

The product being sold is Google Workspace. The mythology being borrowed is the founding of the United States of America, currently approaching its 250th year of existence as a discrete national project.

The commercial was reported by The Verge and has been characterized broadly as cringe-inducing. This characterization appears accurate. The founding fathers did not use AI. They used quill pens, several slaves, and approximately a century of Enlightenment political philosophy that will not fit in a prompt.

That a corporation in 2025 would reach into the origin document of a republic, affix its productivity suite to the event, and release the result as advertising is the kind of gesture that does not require editorializing. The geometry of it is enough. Something antediluvian in the cultural sediment has been disturbed, and the thing doing the disturbing is a collaboration tool with a suggested retail plan.

All views remain equally meaningless.
