T-Mobile Tells Legacy Customers Their Old Plans Are Done

The carrier has begun notifying subscribers on plans dating back to the 3G Sprint era that those rates are being retired and replacements are coming whether they want them or not.

T-Mobile has begun sending notices to customers informing them that a number of legacy rate plans are being retired, with subscribers to be moved onto current offerings from the carrier's active lineup.

The affected plans include options inherited from Sprint following T-Mobile's 2020 acquisition of that carrier, as well as plans that predate widespread 4G LTE deployment — meaning some customers have held the same rate for the better part of fifteen years.

T-Mobile has not released a full inventory of which plans are being discontinued, nor has it published a side-by-side comparison of legacy rates against the replacement plans customers will be assigned.

The notifications do not offer subscribers the option to opt out. Customers who want to keep a different plan than the one T-Mobile selects for them would need to actively choose an alternative before the transition date listed in their individual notice.

T-Mobile's press materials have described the Un-carrier as a company that “listens to customers.” The grandfathered Sprint rate plan has no comment.
