Meg Stalter returned to the Lyceum Theatre on Friday evening to resume her performance as Mary Todd Lincoln in Cole Escola’s Oh, Mary!, ending an absence of roughly one week attributed to bronchitis.
Before the curtain went up, Stalter posted an Instagram Story confirming the return. She did not elaborate on the illness beyond what had already been reported.
After the performance, Stalter appeared at the stage door but did not speak to the fans assembled there. Instead, she circulated a written note — the specific contents of which were not disclosed in filings or statements of record — as her sole form of communication with the crowd.
The show, which originated Off-Broadway at the Cherry Lane Theatre before transferring to the Lyceum at 149 West 45th Street, has run with replacement performers covering Stalter’s role during her absence. Stalter’s Broadway debut had already attracted attention for the physical and vocal demands of the comedy.
She greeted the stage door crowd in writing. The show is about a woman who cannot stop talking.
