Blumhouse's AI-doll franchise is not having a 2025. M3GAN 2.0, the sequel to the 2023 breakout horror hit, posted a reported $21 million domestic gross against a production budget in the range of $75 million. The original film had cost $12 million and returned north of $180 million worldwide.
Now the franchise's planned spinoff, Soulm8te, will not see the inside of a multiplex. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the title is headed directly to home digital on August 1, making it one of the more conspicuous same-day-or-earlier VOD pivots of the summer season.
Soulm8te was developed as a companion piece to the M3GAN universe, centering on a different AI companion concept. Details on cast and runtime have not been widely circulated ahead of the digital drop.
The August 1 date gives the title a Friday release slot — the traditional theatrical launch window — without the theaters.
