That is exactly what the Croisette is getting this May with Tangles, which will hold a special screening at the festival ahead of its wider release window.
The voice cast reads like a call sheet from a prestige comedy project that quietly pivoted somewhere serious. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Seth Rogen, and Bryan Cranston lead the ensemble, with Abbi Jacobson, Beanie Feldstein, Samira Wiley, and Bowen Yang rounding out a lineup that carries significant mainstream recognition across television, film, and comedy. The project is adapted from a graphic memoir of the same name, which charted a family's experience navigating a parent's Alzheimer's diagnosis.
Animation as a vehicle for grief and illness has found consistent critical traction over the past decade — Coco, When Marnie Was There, and others have demonstrated the format's capacity to carry emotional weight without the bluntness of live action. Tangles appears to be working that same territory, with a cast assembled more for emotional range than marquee spectacle.
