The U.S. death toll from the ongoing conflict with Iran has reached 17 after three service members were killed in the Middle East over the past several days, U.S. Central Command confirmed Monday.

Two of those deaths came Friday when Iran struck American troops deployed in Jordan. A third service member died separately in the region under circumstances the Pentagon had not fully disclosed as of Monday morning.

The Jordan attack marks one of the deadliest single incidents for American forces since the conflict escalated. Centcom said it was continuing operations against Iranian military targets in response.

Gas prices crossed the $4-per-gallon threshold nationally for the first time since the conflict began driving up crude costs, according to figures reviewed by the Wail. Analysts tied the jump directly to regional supply uncertainty.

The Pentagon said the names of the three most recently killed service members would be withheld until next of kin are notified. Congress was expected to receive a classified briefing on the operation this week.
