Top Senate Democrats are demanding answers from companies tied to President Trump and his family over whether a Justice Department settlement with the IRS shields those organizations from federal tax investigations or prosecution.
Senators Ron Wyden of Oregon and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut sent formal letters to Trump-affiliated entities this week, the Wail confirmed, pressing for documentation clarifying the reach of the DOJ-IRS deal.
The Democrats described the arrangement as raising “significant questions” about whether well-connected companies are receiving legal cover unavailable to ordinary taxpayers.
The settlement’s precise terms have not been made fully public. Democrats say that opacity makes it impossible to determine whether the agreement insulates Trump-linked businesses from IRS scrutiny that other corporations would face.
A spokesperson for the DOJ did not return a request for comment by publication time. Representatives for the Trump-affiliated companies named in the inquiry had not publicly responded as of Tuesday.
Wyden sits on the Senate Finance Committee, which holds oversight jurisdiction over the IRS. The committee is expected to press the matter further when the Senate returns from recess.
