President Trump cancelled the signing of a bipartisan housing bill Wednesday, refusing to put pen to the measure until the Senate passes the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, the Wail confirmed.
Trump announced the decision publicly, linking the two pieces of legislation and making clear the housing bill goes nowhere without Senate movement on the voter eligibility measure first.
The SAVE Act would require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections. It has cleared the House but stalled in the Senate, where it faces opposition from Democrats who call the requirement a barrier to legal voters.
The housing bill had attracted rare cross-party backing before Wednesday's cancellation. No new signing date has been announced.
The Senate has not placed the SAVE Act on its schedule. Until it does, the housing legislation — and the relief it would deliver to buyers and renters — sits unsigned on the president's desk.
