Two-thirds of Americans believe President Trump is not focused enough on the economy, according to new polling published Thursday by The Guardian, with a majority saying immigration is receiving priority at the expense of financial concerns.
The numbers land days after Trump told reporters he does not think about the financial situation of ordinary Americans — a remark that drew immediate pushback from Democratic lawmakers and some Republicans on Capitol Hill.
Sixty-seven percent of respondents said the administration was giving immigration too much attention relative to economic issues, the poll found. Approval of Trump’s handling of the economy has declined in multiple surveys conducted since February, when the administration’s tariff agenda began reshaping trade expectations.
White House officials did not respond to a request for comment by publication time.
Congressional Republicans are pressing ahead on a budget reconciliation package that includes tax cuts and spending reductions. The House Budget Committee is expected to advance the measure in the coming days, with a floor vote targeted before the end of the month.
