President Trump called Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) a “disloyal disaster” and a “sleazebag” on Truth Social this week, ramping up pressure on the incumbent senator days before Louisiana's Senate primary.
The posts mark Trump's sharpest public attack yet on Cassidy, one of seven Senate Republicans who voted to convict him in the February 2021 impeachment trial stemming from the January 6 Capitol riot.
Trump has backed a primary challenger against Cassidy and has made the Louisiana race a test of loyalty to his political operation.
Cassidy, first elected in 2014, has not publicly responded to the latest attacks. He has previously defended his impeachment vote as a matter of conscience and constitutional duty.
The Louisiana Senate primary is expected to draw national attention as a gauge of Trump's continued hold over Republican base voters in a deep-red state.
Louisiana voters head to the polls Saturday.
