Irish police intercepted a car carrying what officers called an “extremely significant” bomb on Friday, arresting two people in County Monaghan before the device could reach Northern Ireland.
The Garda said the vehicle was stopped as part of an operation targeting dissident republican activity. The device was described as serious in scale and intent.
No injuries were reported. The two arrested individuals were taken into custody at the scene, according to Irish police statements reviewed by the Wail.
Dissident republican groups opposed to the Good Friday Agreement have carried out sporadic attacks and attempted attacks in Northern Ireland and the Republic in recent years. Friday's intercept is among the most significant seizures in recent months.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland and UK security services are expected to be briefed on the find. Authorities in Dublin have not confirmed the precise intended target or the group believed responsible.
A Garda press conference is expected later Friday. Further charges are anticipated as the investigation develops.
