The United States launched a new round of airstrikes against Iran on Sunday after Iranian attacks in Jordan killed two American service members and left a third missing, the Wail confirmed from multiple reports.
The White House said the strikes were designed to “swiftly punish” Iran following the deaths, the latest US military casualties tied to Iranian-linked activity in the region.
Details on the strike targets and munitions used had not been fully disclosed as of Sunday afternoon. The Pentagon confirmed the two fatalities and said a search was ongoing for the missing service member.
Separately, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps reported that two ships were involved in an “accident” near the Strait of Hormuz after the vessels defied warnings issued by US forces operating in the area. The IRGC did not provide casualty figures or further details.
The incidents mark a sharp escalation in direct military exchange between the US and Iran, with no diplomatic talks announced and no indication either side is seeking an immediate off-ramp.
A Pentagon briefing is expected later Sunday, with Congressional leadership set to be notified under the War Powers Resolution. Further US military action has not been ruled out.
