President Trump declared the ceasefire with Iran “over” Wednesday as Iranian state media reported US strikes near the Bushehr nuclear power plant on the country's southwestern coast, marking a sharp escalation in direct military exchanges between the two countries.
Iranian media said explosions were heard in the vicinity of the Bushehr facility. The plant has been operational since 2011 and sits on the Persian Gulf coast roughly 750 kilometres south of Tehran.
The US confirmed strike activity in the region without specifying targets. CENTCOM, headquartered in Qatar, did not immediately provide a full operational accounting.
Kuwait's foreign ministry issued a formal statement Wednesday condemning Iranian attacks on regional targets, making it one of the first Gulf states to go on record against Tehran during the current exchange.
The strikes come amid heightened tension across the Strait of Hormuz, the chokepoint through which an estimated 20 percent of global oil supply moves daily. Bahrain and Kuwait, both home to US military installations, had earlier reported incidents linked to the exchange.
Further US and Iranian statements are expected within hours. Congressional briefings on military authorisation are anticipated Thursday.
