George Russell will start Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix from pole position after a qualifying session at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg that ended in the kind of chaos the stewards were still sorting through Saturday evening.

Russell's benchmark lap — 0.236 seconds clear of Charles Leclerc — was set in the final seconds of Q3. Those same final seconds also produced a crash from Max Verstappen, which raised a yellow flag in the sector and prompted immediate complaints from rivals that laps completed under yellow should not have stood.

The Guardian reported Saturday that the finish was being described as contentious, with the yellow-flag question sitting at the centre of post-session scrutiny. Stewards had not issued a final ruling at the time of publication.

Leclerc, who would inherit pole if Russell's time were struck, said nothing publicly that will help anyone's blood pressure.

Verstappen, whose car brought out the yellow flag that may or may not invalidate the lap that beat his teammate to the front row, will line up somewhere behind the man who benefited from it.
