A suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle near a railway track in Quetta on Saturday as a passenger train travelled through the south-western Pakistani city, killing at least 23 people and wounding others, according to reports reviewed by the Wail.

The blast struck in Balochistan province, where militant groups have repeatedly targeted rail lines, security personnel, and civilian infrastructure in recent years.

The full death toll remained unconfirmed in the immediate aftermath as rescue teams worked the scene. Local hospitals received multiple casualties, sources told the Wail.

No group claimed responsibility in the hours following the attack. Pakistani security forces sealed off the area and began an investigation, according to reports.

The attack is the deadliest strike on Pakistani rail infrastructure in recent memory. Balochistan has seen an escalation in militant activity in 2025 and 2026, with separatist and Islamist groups both operating in the province.

Pakistani authorities are expected to brief the press on casualties and any suspects identified in the coming hours.
