Iran has published a map asserting “armed forces oversight” across more than 22,000 square kilometres of the Strait of Hormuz, in the most explicit territorial claim Tehran has staked over the waterway to date.

The strait carries an estimated one-fifth of the world's seaborne oil, making Iranian military claims over its waters a direct threat to global energy supply lines.

The map was circulated by Iranian state channels and makes no distinction between internationally recognised Iranian territorial waters and open-passage shipping lanes used by vessels from dozens of nations.

Western naval commands and Gulf Cooperation Council states have consistently rejected previous Iranian assertions of authority over Hormuz transit rights. The United States Fifth Fleet, based in Bahrain, patrols the region specifically to keep the strait open.

Iran has seized or harassed foreign-flagged vessels in and near the strait on multiple occasions since 2019. Tuesday's map publication signals a further hardening of that posture.

Responses from the United States, the United Kingdom, and GCC member states are expected within hours.
