A Qantas flight operating the Melbourne-to-Dallas Fort Worth route made an unscheduled stop at Tahiti's Faa'a International Airport after a passenger allegedly bit a flight attendant and engaged in disruptive behaviour, the airline confirmed this week.
The incident, reported by The Guardian on May 17, 2026, involved a male passenger whose conduct prompted the crew to divert the service — a flight that, under normal circumstances, does not touch down anywhere between Australia and Texas.
Qantas said the passenger has been permanently banned from future travel with the carrier. The airline did not specify at what point during the flight the alleged biting occurred, nor the severity of the flight attendant's injury.
Aviation incidents involving physical assault on crew members are referred to Australian Federal Police under the Crimes (Aviation) Act 1991, which applies to Australian-registered aircraft regardless of where in the world the conduct takes place.
Tahiti, for the record, sits approximately 8,800 kilometres from Melbourne and roughly 8,200 kilometres from Dallas — which is to say, more or less exactly halfway between a place the flight was supposed to leave and a place it was supposed to arrive.
