Wes Streeting resigned as Health Secretary on Thursday, issuing a statement that directly attacked Prime Minister Keir Starmer and called for a Labour leadership contest to replace him.

Streeting, one of the most senior figures in the Starmer government, accused the Prime Minister of failing the party and the country, according to reporting by the New York Times on May 14, 2026.

The resignation is the most high-profile internal break with Starmer since Labour took power and hands the opposition a ready-made line of attack ahead of any confidence vote or election cycle.

No deputy or acting secretary has been named to fill the Health brief as of Thursday evening. Downing Street had not issued a formal response to the resignation statement at time of filing.

Labour's parliamentary party is expected to meet in the coming days. Whether the party's rules permit a leadership challenge without a Commons defeat or formal no-confidence motion remains a central question party officials will face before the week is out.
