Three Labour ministers have resigned after Prime Minister Keir Starmer told his cabinet Monday he will not step down from office unless a formal leadership challenge is launched against him.
Jess Phillips, the safeguarding minister, was among the first to quit. Alex Davies-Jones became the third minister to resign within hours of the cabinet meeting, the News confirmed.
Starmer's declaration drew an immediate response from the ministerial benches. Sources told the News the Prime Minister's position was received in cabinet with visible tension before the resignations followed in quick succession.
The departures represent the most significant internal rupture of the Starmer government to date. No replacement appointments had been announced as of Monday afternoon.
The Labour parliamentary party is expected to convene in the coming days. Whether additional ministers follow Phillips and Davies-Jones out of government will determine whether a formal leadership contest is triggered under party rules.
