Cole Tomas Allen, 31, pleaded not guilty Monday to charges of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump, according to court records reviewed by the News.

Allen did not speak during the brief court appearance. His plea was entered on his behalf by the presiding judge.

The charges stem from an alleged plot connected to the Washington correspondents' dinner, one of the capital's most publicly visible annual events, drawing journalists, politicians, and senior White House officials under one roof.

Attempting to assassinate a sitting president carries a potential sentence of life imprisonment under federal statute.

Federal prosecutors have not yet filed a detailed public outline of the alleged method or timeline of the plot. Further details are expected to emerge as pretrial filings accumulate in the coming weeks.

No trial date has been set. A scheduling conference is expected to be held in federal court before the end of the month.
