Rocket Lab USA announced Monday it has agreed to acquire Iridium Communications in an $8 billion deal the company characterized, in its own words, as a “shortcut.”
The Long Beach–based launch firm, best known for its Electron rocket and the mid-development Neutron vehicle, would inherit Iridium's operational constellation of 66 low-Earth-orbit satellites upon close — a network that already provides global voice and data coverage to commercial, maritime, and government customers.
Rocket Lab chief executive Peter Beck framed the acquisition as acceleration, not distraction: buying a working constellation sidesteps the decade-long build cycle that SpaceX absorbed before Starlink turned cash-flow positive.
Iridium's current subscriber base runs to roughly 2.2 million connections. Its Generation 8 satellite refresh is not yet funded.
The $8 billion figure represents a significant premium for a company whose market capitalization had been running closer to $3 billion before deal speculation surfaced. Rocket Lab's own market cap sat near $10 billion at Monday's open.
Neither company disclosed a regulatory review timeline, a financing structure, or a debt-assumption figure in Monday's announcement. The press release did not mention the Generation 8 refresh once.
