Khloé Kardashian disclosed this week that her cats were declawed — a surgical procedure the American Association of Feline Practitioners formally opposes and one that is banned or restricted in California, New York, Maryland, and more than 40 countries.
The disclosure came via social media, where Kardashian stated she had been “really misadvised” before authorizing the procedure. “I feel like that's why my cats are miserable and it was at my doing,” she said, according to Page Six's May 21 report.
Onychectomy — the clinical term — involves amputating the distal phalanx of each toe. Veterinary professional bodies have moved steadily against the practice over the past decade on animal welfare grounds.
Kardashian did not name the veterinarian or practice that performed the surgery, nor did she specify when it took place or how many animals were involved.
The cats were not available for comment, though their disposition has apparently been noted.
